GedWise PC Issues
1. Q: Why do characters with accents and umlauts
not show up correctly in my GedWise database?
Upgrade your version of GedWise to 4.0 or later. This version
handles the ANSEL character set properly.
2. Q: In Family Tree Maker® what options should I use
when I create a GEDCOM file that I will transfer into GedWise?
Choose the following options when you create the GEDCOM file:
Destination: FTM or PAF
GEDCOM: Version 5.5
Character Set: ANSEL
Indent Records: DO NOT CHECK THIS BOX
Abbreviate Tags: CHECK THIS BOX
Family Tree Maker 9.0 users may have problems with Notes if PAF is selected
as the destination. If so, select FTM as the destination.
3. Q: What options should I use when creating a GEDCOM file that I
will transfer into GedWise?
The many different types and versions of genealogy software all provide
different options during the GEDCOM export process. If you are using
Family Tree Maker, see FAQ #2. For other software, if you have an option
for the GEDCOM version, choose 5.5. If you have an option for the
character set, choose ANSI or ANSEL.
4. Q: Why do I get data Warnings when I process my
GEDCOM file with GedWise PC. Does this mean my file will not work in
GedWise?
GedWise will sometimes find bad data in your GEDCOM file and will warn you
of such data during processing. Any bad data found is ignored and excluded
from your GedWise database. Bad data is usually related to tags in your
GEDCOM file that are not compatible with the GEDCOM 5.5 standard. However,
in nearly every instance your database will work fine in the GedWise Viewer.
GedWise Viewer Issues
1. Q: I am running GedWise on a Tungsten T3,
which as a dynamic input area. For some reason GedWise does not make use
of my device's expanded screens. What is wrong?
Some Tungsten T3's do not come with two Palm dynamic input
area support files pre-installed. Palm has created and made available these
files for developers to distribute in order to enable applications to make use
of the extended screen on the T3. These files add support for GedWise as
well as any 3rd party application using the extended screen on the T3. Click
here to download the
two required files, which are contained in one 37K compressed (zipped) file.
After downloading the file, open it and double click on both "prc" files to add
them to the Palm Quick Installer. Then do a Hotsync. Please see the
readme file within the download file for additional information. Note that
BOTH prc files must be installed on your T3 at the same time.
2. Q: Why are my Notes missing in my genealogy
database on my handheld device?
Your notes just may be placed in a location you have not
checked. The location of a note primarily depends on the type of note it
is. For instance, a note that is related to an event will be viewable when
you select that event on the Individual Summary Screen. A Note regarding a
person's name can be viewed when you tap on that name in the Individual Summary
Screen. Other notes not associated with an event or name will be located
in the Event List on the Individual Summary Screen. If you do not see your
notes in any of these locations, it is possible you specified to exclude notes
either when you created your GEDCOM file or when you created the GedWise
database.
3. Q: In certain instances I cannot enter
an 'i', 't' or 'k' when using the 'Find' name feature on the Individual List
Screen?
This can happen on newer handhelds running the Pam OS 5 with
Graffit 2. This has been patched in the GedWise 5.0 release uploaded on
this site on
October 27, 2003. Check your version
number on your GedWise "About" screen (Menu > Help > About GedWise). The
version should show 5.0.0.006 or later. Current users of GedWise 5.0
should install this new version directly over your current version. You DO
NOT HAVE TO UNINSTALL GedWise 5.0 first.
4. Q: How do I change the colors for
persons on the Individual List Screen?
The options for specifying colors are on page 2 of the
GedWise Preferences. Start up GedWise on your handheld device and press
your handheld's Menu button. Then select Options > Preferences and press
the "Page 2" button at the bottom the the screen. You will then see the
screen where you can change the GedWise colors and fonts.
5. Q: Why do I get the error, "Fatal Error, SystemMgr.c, Line: ####, Unimplemented", on my handheld device when I
am running GedWise?
This error occurs if you are using an old Palm operating system on your
handheld device. If you are using an operating system lower than version
3.3, Palm handheld users can upgrade to version 3.3 for free by downloading it directly from
Palm's web site. You can link to the upgrade page on this site via the
following link:

Installation
and Un-installation Issues
1. Q: How do I install GedWise on a
Debian-based Linux system?
Depending on your specific Linux distribution, you may
be able to install the GedWise RPM file using the following commands in the
terminal window:
sudo alien gedwise-6.3-2.i386.rpm
sudo dpkg -i gedwise_6.3-3_i386.deb
2. Q: While installing GedWise I get an error message
that says "Catapult
could not detect a compatible Palm Desktop software configuration and will
cancel the installation.” What can I do to
fix this problem?
The error message means you have a very old or corrupted Palm
Desktop program installed on your computer. The solution is to reinstall
your Palm Desktop software, preferably with Palm's latest FREE release of this
program. You can get the latest Palm Desktop program directly from the
Palm (www.PalmOne.com) website.
3. Q: While installing GedWise I get an error message
that says "The installation package cannot be installed by the Windows
Installer Service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a
newer version of the Windows Installer Service." Alternatively,
you might get Error #1335 or a number of other messages. What can I do to
install GedWise?
You might get error messages if you are running Windows 95, 98 or NT and have
not updated Windows in awhile. To fix this issue you must update your
version of Windows. You can update Windows for free using Microsoft's
update website at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.
4. Q: During the installation process I get a message
that says I must download a file named "instmsia.exe" prior to
continuing the installation. What is this file and why do I need it?
You might get this message if you are running Windows 95, 98 or NT and don't
have Microsoft's new Windows Installer package installed on your system.
Simply download the file when prompted and continue with the installation.
